What: We will begin studying the Zen teachings of Bodhidharma on August 29, 2018, for 6 weeks. (We will be using “The Teaching OF BODHIDHARMA” by Red Pine as a reference.) Wednesday, August 22, 2018, will be an introduction. Here is an outline or study plan for the following 6 weeks (subject to change). Bodhidharma is considered the founder of Zen in China and is the patriarch of millions of Zen Buddhists. Where better to start a study of the great Zen teachers!
When: The doors open at 6:30 pm and the practice session begins promptly at 7:00 pm with the chanting of the Heart Sutra. We then sit in zazen for twenty-five minutes. We serve tea and study the teachings of the great Zen teachers using various references and commentaries. We finish up by 8:30 pm.
Week one: Outline of Practice – The two roads that lead to the Path. Reason and Practice.
Week two: The Four all-inclusive practices: suffering injustice, adapting to conditions, seeking nothing, and practicing the Dharma.
Week three: Bloodstream Sermon – This mind is the Buddha
Week four: Bloodstream Sermon continued – No attaining anything
Week five: Wake-up Sermon – the essence of the way, detachment
Week six: Wake-up Sermon continued – witnessed on the way
Note: No experience is necessary and all are welcome. A donation is not required to participate, however, a voluntary donation (suggested $5.00) will help defray our costs. Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing. We have some cushions (zafus) and chairs, however, if you have your own zafu, we encourage you to bring your own.
