Folding armchairs are not allowed for the Silent Retreat at Myakka River State Park, This Saturday, March 1, 2025

Folding canvas chairs or arm chairs (like above) are not firm enough for sitting meditation, and we do not have room for them. Please do not bring folding arm chairs. Bring simple folding chairs, like the white chair below. We will provide chairs and benches if you do not bring one. Let us know if you will be needing a chair. You may also bring a pillow or cushion for your chair.
  • Plan to arrive early (by 9:30 a.m.) to get settled. The retreat will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.
  • We will start by taking refuge in the three treasures (The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha) and chanting the Heart Sutra. I will give an short intro talk before we begin. Throughout the day, there will be several sitting and walking meditations with short breaks.
  • The retreat will be held in silence until the end of the day when we will have our closing Dharma talk and discussion.
  • No phones or talking in the Log Pavilion and the attached picnic areas. Please feel free to talk to me privately away from the main area, should you have any questions or concerns.
  • Private interviews with me are optional and will be available during a afternoon session.
  • If you are new to Zen Meditation, I strongly recommend you read "How to Meditate" on our website before the retreat. It will help you get the most out of your retreat experience.
  • Dress comfortably with loose fitting clothes. Please, no perfume. Wear appropriate shoes for walking on the trail.
  • Leave unnecessary personal items and valuables in your locked car.
  • Plates, cups, flatware, water and tea will be provided. We will have coolers with ice for any food items you bring for the pot luck lunch, if you don't bring your own.
  • The retreat will end by 5:30 p.m. We will need to be finished, packed up and leave by sundown, around 6:30 p.m.
