Meditation Workshop with Chong An Sunim

OZS-Zendo

Workshop Protocol

This email is being sent to everyone who registered, even if you did not register for the entire weekend. Please ignore whatever doesn't pertain to you.
  • The workshop schedule can be found here.
  • Friday, Sept. 21 - 7:00 PM. Q. & A. This will be a Dharma Talk and questions are encouraged.
  • Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23. The Workshop will be a Silent Retreat. All communication other than necessary functional communication must be off premises. This includes during the Saturday lunchtime potluck. The retreat will conclude Sunday after the Precepts Ceremony. Talking is allowed at the Sangha potluck and celebration afterward.
  • Potluck Lunch and Kong-an Interviews will be in the Office Condo right next door to the Zendo, immediately west (to the left facing the zendo). This unit is not in use and is being made available to us for the weekend. This will be used as the lunchtime break room and there will be no talking in the break room during the retreat. You are still on retreat at the lunch break. This area will also be used for private interviews with Chong An Sunim during the retreat.
  • Keep your phone off in the Zendo during the retreat. The only exception is during the midday break and potluck in the break room next door to the zendo. Please be considerate of the people around you and make sure your phone is on silent. Texting is okay if necessary, but take your verbal communications off premises.

Donations for Chong An Sunim

Dokusan, or Kong-an interviews, is a part of Zen practice whereby a student meets with a teacher for practice guidance. It is customary to give a donation to a teacher when we meet for practice discussion. Likewise, it is customary to leave a donation for the teacher when receiving the precepts. Please leave donations for Chong An Sunim in an envelope with his name on it in the donation box located at the shoe cubby when you enter the Zendo. You may also leave a general donation to support OZS in the donation box or make a donation with PayPal on our website: https://ordinaryzensangha.org/donations/

Feeding Ourselves

Saturday and Sunday Potluck Lunch
There will be a microwave and cooler available. Water and Tea will be provided.
  • Please label the dishes you bring. Some folks have food allergies, so please list the ingredients in the dish you bring. There will be Post-its available to create your labels if you don't bring one with you.
  • Saturday, it is best to keep the meal simple and light, vegetarian or vegan. (We don't want to fall asleep during afternoon practice!)
  • Sunday, Since this is the end of the retreat and feasting is permitted, desserts are welcome.
Utensils and Cleanup
In lieu of paper products and disposable waste, OZS will provide reusable service items, such as plates, cups, and utensils, but feel free to bring your own. We will need a couple of volunteers at the end of each lunch period to clean up, wash all OZS items and replace them in the Zendo kitchen.

Please check the website calendar for any scheduling changes.

May all beings be happy.
May they awaken from the dream.
May delusions fall away and clinging cease.
Ignorance, greed, and anger have no hold on the awakened heart.
